Yebwiersma - Think Of A Storm

THINK OF
A STORM
¹

Artistic Research Residency [2011] - a visual and literary exploration of the Noord-Oost Polder Area [NL]. Initiated by Museum de Paviljoens and hosted by Studio Makkink Bey. During my journeys through the New Land I stirred up an interior storm, of thoughts and stories adrift, bringing along my on site harvest. Reflections and Results will be presented upcoming Summer.

AZC Luttelgeest - during my Polder Days I paid several visits to the Refugee Centre. Being introduced to the staff and residents; exchanging local and faraway tales about The Sea.
1. Working Title -Line from SONNET by poet Elizabeth Bishop: Think of a storm, roaming the sky uneasily,
2. Spaciousness - Reference Reading: The Philosophy of Andy Warhol - [..] My mind divides spaces into spaces into spaces and thoughts into thoughts into thoughts. Like a Large Condominium. To be rich, I believe is to have One Space. One Big Empty Space..[..] + Pioneering Journalism - Reference Reading: Let Us Now Praise Famous Men by James Agee and Walker Evans, see image bookpage above.

Once, the North East Polder belonged to the Zuiderzee - Southern Sea. This all changed in 1942 when this semi-wild sea area was tamed by Dutch engineers and turned into new, fertile agricultural land. The overall architectural structure of the Polder was designed according to Dutch Modernistic tradition; sober, most functional. Resembling a Mondrian painted grid. Dikes draw pencil lines separating the water from the land, the Wilderness from Geometrism.

Image Left: Entrance of Museum Nagele - the museum shows the Modernist history of this village in the Noordoostpolder, which was designed from scratch by a team of 8 architects including Gerrit Rietveld and Aldo van Eyk a.o. between 1948 and 1954.
Image left is part of a children's workshop I hosted at primary school De Wissel at the Refugee Centre. Exercises in Shadowplay and Storytelling. We projected images of the Noordoost Polder Landscape and surrounding Sea using it as a stage for our imagination - all assignments were related to the sea. Introducing Moby Dick, Ommele Bommele Stien a.o. Being aware that not so long ago high and low tide travelled through the same gym class we played at.

Before we started our shadowplay I asked the school children to draw upon the idea of the life within the sea, within a whale. This one is made by Mateusz.
